On 15th of May Mrs Vassiliki Christou and the lawyer Niki Tiliakou, both executive members of the Panhellenic Animal Welfare and Environmental Federation had a scheduled meeting with the professor Mr. M.Spourdalakis(head and chairman of the constitutional amendment committee)and the professor Nicos Mouzelis, member of the committee.
During the meeting which was carried out in a friendly atmosphere and lasted for one hour and a half, the two members of the Federation dissected the reasons why we believe that the animal protection should be fortified by constitution, as occurs in a number of countries.
The members of the constitutional amendment committee have discussed with our executive members about ethical and legal matters which pertain to our demand. This demand is the basic one of the animal welfare community in Greece as well as that one of hundred thousand forward-thinking citizens. The committee conducted us which should be our next steps.
Till now, about 32.000 have been collected in order the following text is inserted in Article 22 of the written Constitution.
“The State is obliged to take all appropriate measures for the protection and respect of life in all its expressions.Especially, the State provides for the welfare of all animal species, their living conditions, retention, transportation and import, while imposing bans and restrictions wherever it is necessary and specifically affairs in animal testing and killing of animals. It must also protect the wild life, specially for endangered species.”

Living in an absolute anthropocentric society and with still ingrained anachronistic concepts, it is required a lot of effort and persistence for the protection of animals under the Constitution. At the end, we are hopeful that the obvious right of all non-human beings in life and welfare will be constitutionally vested, as it happens with human rights.
We call on hundreds of thousands of people who are involved in the protection and animal rights to struggle with us to positive changes for animals benefit as well as the benefit of humans society.
